IBM stores a bit on just 12 atoms

By | 14th January, 2012 | 0 Comments

The IBM Research team led by Andreas Heinrich have successfully stored  a bit of magnetic data in just 12 atoms. This ability represents a storage density that is at least 100 times denser than the largest hard drive platters or flash memory chips.

So How did they do it?

They did this with an STM (Scanning Tunneling Microscope  which is a room-sized device with a very tiny tip that can image, measure, and manipulate structures at an atomic level using a small electric current.

Here’s the Video demonstration of how this works by Andreas Heinrich himself.
