Alternatives to Smushit for image compression?
« on: Jun 25, 2017, 11:04 AM »
I want to discuss some of the alternatives of the popular image compression service called Smushit. It was great at reducing the size of the images without losing much quality.

Now there are some alternatives but are they really good enough? Yahoo was behind smushit which made it work on big infrastructure. Now we only have small startups trying to please the internet crowd.

Personally, i've been using shortpixel for some time now. I was in their beta program and they worked pretty well. But when you check the compression and optimizations against google pagespeed, it still doesn't seem to be compressed to Google's standard. I also like using a cloud service because it is putting less stress on my own wordpress server.

Running an standalone image compression application also need good knowledge of linux and how it works. Otherwise, its just going to mess up the whole server.

What are your thoughts on this and what has been working for you? would love to try some new alternatives

Personally I use photoshop and save for web as the first step. Also some times I've been using optimus.io for Wordpress. their prices are fair compared to other similar services. Also there's imagify but haven't tried them for some time to give an opinion.
