I have Ubuntu some times causing a blank black desktop without any desktop icons and such, and unable to being to open the file manager. I found a simple command to bring it back with something similar to windows desktop being unable to load. You just restart the app that is responsible for that section to load. On Windows its explorer.exe and on Ubuntu 13.04 its nautilus.

So once you get that black screen just press "Ctrl+Alt+T" to bring a terminal window. Then just type nautilus, this will restore your desktop to original state with icons and the background.

Hope this comes in handy with beginners learning Ubuntu.

I don't know of the errors on that command. :P
