Google has been fighting with Apple and Microsoft for patent attacks which are used against the open source Android to make Google pay for them. Motorola is one of the founding members of Open Handset Alliance which helped make Android a open source mobile platform. Motorola also has been using Android as its operating system for Smart Phones since 2007.

So this acquisition is deemed to help the Google and Android raise the stakes against Apple and Microsoft in the battle for supremacy in Smart Phone Industry.
